Estate Chardonnay 2019

Chardonnay achieves something special in the cool of Musk. A plethora of racy citrus flavours and cool climate edginess when grown in the Macedon Ranges. Growing here, atop our north-facing slope on the Great Dividing Range, our vineyard is one of the coldest sites in the country. Ours is Chardonnay with a line of searing acidity and a distinctly cool climate swagger.

Winemaker Notes

Vintage 2019 was slightly cooler than the renowned 2018, but still delivered exceptional quality due in part to cooler summer conditions, with a good taste of summer rains leading into a warmer dryer Autumn, allowing us to pick at ideal ripeness.
Winemaking
The majority of fruit was crushed, pressed, settled and to oak. 30% spent 24 hours on skins prior to being pressed. The ferments were 100% ambient, with some taking 6 months to complete. All barrels underwent fortnightly battonage and underwent a partial natural malolactic fermentation. Matured for 10 months in French oak hogsheads, 55% new.

Vineyard, Vintage Notes

Our Musk Estate vineyard is on a very cool site with a top elevation of 742m above sea level. It is north facing with volcanic soils. The modified wide T trellis gives us good penetration of sunlight and wind, reducing disease pressure and increasing vine balance and its ability to ripen the fruit evenly.
We manage the vineyard according to regenerative agricultural practices. This is a way of farming using a set of principles that enrich soils and increase their carbon storage capacity dramatically, increase biodiversity, improve the water cycle and enhance the overall ecosystem of the farm. The vineyard is spur-pruned by hand to two buds per spur, reducing yield and controlling vine vigour. Further shoot thinning, and defoliation occurs later in the season, again by hand, to allow further sunlight penetration and maximising air flow around the bunches.
