Vintage 2019 was slightly cooler than the renowned 2018, but still delivered exceptional quality due in part to cooler summer conditions, with a good taste of summer rains leading into a warmer dryer autumn, allowing us to pick at ideal ripeness.
All individual blocks are kept separate for vinification. All batches were given a generous cold soak before being individually fermented in small open stainless-steel vats with gentle hand plunging twice daily. In total there was 12% whole bunch included across the batches.
Matured in French Hogs Heads for 10 months, 70% new.
Brilliant cherry red with a purple hue. A sophisticated nose shows savory spice, cured meats and leather alongside raspberry and other fruits. The palate is controlled from start to finish with potent acidity that speaks to this Pinot living for years. There is elegance in the balance between the sweetness of the blue fruit and this acidity, all contained by ultra-fine tannin that carries through the finish.
Vineyard, Vintage Notes
Our Musk Estate vineyard is on a very cool site with a top elevation of 742m above sea level. It is north facing with volcanic soils. The modified wide T trellis gives us good penetration of sunlight and wind, reducing disease pressure and increasing vine balance and its ability to ripen the fruit evenly.
We manage the vineyard according to regenerative agricultural practices. This is a way of farming using a set of principles that enrich soils and increase their carbon storage capacity dramatically, increase biodiversity, improve the water cycle and enhance the overall ecosystem of the farm. Please contact us for more information.
The vineyard is spur-pruned by hand to two buds per spur, reducing yield and controlling vine vigour. Further shoot thinning and defoliation occurs later in the season again by hand to allow further sunlight penetration and maximising air flow around the bunches.
