The chardonnay harvest occurred on March 24th with both the west block, which consists of 15 rows and the east block just five rows being picked on the same day. These blocks were kept separate with the majority of the east block at slightly lower harvest baume’s going into stainless steel tank destined for the ‘blue label’ and the slightly riper west block destined for oak.
All fruit was gently whole bunch pressed and settled overnight before making its way to barrel. Half of the barrels were inoculated whilst the other half were left to ferment naturally which took nearly two months for all barrels to complete ferment.
All barrels underwent fortnightly battonage (lees stirring) and underwent natural malolactic fermentation in barrel, which was arrested before all barrels went through 100% to ensure balance. Matured for 11 months in French oak hogsheads, 30% new, 25% one year old, 45% seasoned. No fining, minimal sulfites, sterile filtration. Bottled - February 2017. Release - November 2017.
Vineyard, Vintage Notes
Our Musk Estate vineyard is on a very cool site with a top elevation of 742m above sea level. It is north facing with volcanic soils. The modified wide T trellis gives us good penetration of sunlight and wind, reducing disease pressure and increasing vine balance and its ability to ripen the fruit evenly.
The vineyard is spur-pruned by hand to two buds per spur, reducing yield and controlling vine vigour. Further shoot thinning, and defoliation occurs later in season again by hand to allow further sunlight penetration and maximising air flow around the bunches.
After a relatively dry winter and spring, vintage got off to an early start with budburst occurring on the 4th of October 2015. The growing season was relatively warm and dry which allowed for fairly trouble-free viticulture with no disease pressure, worrying rain/hail events and the like.
The fruit matured well, with riper cool climate flavours, striking acidity and excellent balance. We harvested in late March 2016, yielding around 10 tonnes, just less than 2 tonnes to the acre.
