Winemaker Notes

We split the pinot noir harvest over two days: the west block which consists of three rows of MV6 and two rows of 777 being picked on March 24th along with the first few rows of the east block. Then the remaining rows of east block which is MV6 were picked on March 28th.

These batches were kept separate and given a generous cold soak before being individually fermented in small open stainless steel vats with gentle hand plunging twice daily. In total there was around 10% whole bunches included across the batches.

These particular batches were pressed individually once dry without any extended post-ferment maceration. Matured for 11 months in French oak hogsheads, 50% new, 40% one year old, 10% seasoned and undergoing natural malolactic fermentation in barrel. No fining, minimal sulfites, coarse filtration. Bottled - February 2017. Release - November 2017.

Vineyard, Vintage Notes

Our Musk Estate vineyard is on a very cool site with a top elevation of 742m above sea level. It is north facing with volcanic soils.

The modified wide T trellis gives us good penetration of sunlight and wind, reducing disease pressure and improving vine balance and its ability to ripen the fruit evenly.

The vineyard is spur-pruned by hand to two buds per spur, reducing yield and controlling vine vigour. Further shoot thinning, and defoliation occurs later in the season again by hand to allow further sunlight penetration and maximising air flow around the bunches.

After a relatively dry winter and spring, the season got off to an early start with budburst occurring on the 4th of October 2015. The growing season was relatively warm and dry which allowed for fairly trouble-free viticulture with no disease pressure or worrying weather events.

The fruit matured well, with riper cool climate flavours, striking acidity and firm tannins. We harvested in late March 2016, yielding just under 6 tonnes, around 1.5 tonnes to the acre.
