Winemaker Notes

The Angel is a selection of our finest, most elegant Cabernet Sauvignon barrels each year. After 12 months in oak, the selection process begins and each barrel is carefully sampled to determine whether it has made the cut. When the barrels are selected they are aged for an additional four months, bottled in winter and then aged in bottle for a further 12 months prior to release. The resultant wine is a sophisticated and extremely age-worthy expression of a cooler climate Cabernet Sauvignon.
Deep crimson in colour. Intense aromatics, a broad spectrum of fruits with red black and blue all in there, crushed herbs add complexity along with gamey leathery notes. The palate shows a lovely weight, with beautiful fine, powdery tannins, framed by juicy fruit and soft acidity.

Vineyard, Vintage Notes

The Serpentine vineyard sits on the banks of the Loddon River 42 km north west of the township of Bendigo. Established in 1999 the vines are now 18 years old. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon (Clone: SA125) and Shiraz (Clone: PT23). The vines are cane pruned with shoot and bunch thinning occurring when required. Minimal irrigation is applied to achieve a balance between optimum fruit and a sparse canopy. Due to the particularly low rainfall and canopy more reminiscent of a dry grown vineyard rather than an irrigated, application of fungicide is rare. The soil is sandy clay loam over friable reddish clay with limestone pebbles.
In 2017 the barrels that made the cut were all from the Serpentine vineyard in Northern Bendigo, well known for producing superb Cabernet of intensity and elegance. 20% of the blend enjoyed an extended post ferment maceration increasing aromatic complexity and depth to the palate. 2017 being a slightly cooler year for Bendigo led to slow ripening and therefore a very complex and elegant wine.
