The Angel 2023 Bottle

Interesting wine. Fine, finessed, light and elegant, with good structure and length. Pencils, blueberries, fennel, eucalypt and redcurrant characters with a burst of flowers and leather on the finish. It’s cabernet in nebbiolo mode, in a way. It has that light length. It’s most interesting, and engaging. At its best: now to 2031+.

This was a fabulous vintage in Bendigo, like much of the rest of the east coast of Australia, and the wine reflects that. It’s an exceptional wine displaying powerful Cabernet fruit with an effortless and stylish degree of elegance and refinement. The colour is bright, a deep red ruby colour, and there are aromas of blackberry and glazed cherry with a little leafy, almost bay leaf, olive tapenade aromatic. The tannins are chewy with a slightly chalky feel and probably reflect the 100 days that the wine was left on skins. This is a generous wine with its deep concentration requiring a decent oak addition, and yet it is not an oaky wine. This is a super wine of elegance and charm that captures everything you might want to see in a Bendigo Cabernet. At its best: now to 2040.
